What do you know about FACETS, i.e., the heuristic traps identified by McCammon in his seminal paper on human factors in avalanche terrain (McCammon,2002; 2004)? What can we know about prominent decision errors in avalanche terrain, given the available research?
Together with researchers at Center for Avalanche Research and Education (CARE) at UiT and researchers at Snow and avalanche laboratory at MSU, we have written a paper in which we discuss what we can learn from FACETS, and what we need to be cautious about. We hope that the paper can help avalanche educators, users of avalanche terrain, and scientists doing research on decision-making in avalanche terrain.
The paper is freely available here.
